Authentically YOU, GOLDEN & FREE!

At precisely the stroke of midnight, DJ Jahsonic took his place back on the turntables and 🎶I’m taking my freedom. Putting it in my stroll. I’ll be high-steppin’ y’all. Letting the joy unfold. I’m livin’ my life like it’s golden…🎶 came through. It’s like the Universe sent him to deliver me that perfect message as the clock welcomed in the now odd yet beautiful age of 51. I was clear I wanted to welcome my birthday in while dancing. That mission was accomplished and bonused with a perfect message. Happy Birthday Beautiful and Amazingly Awesome Kathryn!

When I think about it, living my life like it’s golden is really all about living an authentic life. The word authenticity resonates with me daily. Especially at this time in my 1/2 century + one year (YUKES!). But whether 51 or 25, it’s so important to live from a place of being and revealing your true self from sun up to sundown. Not that unfulfilled, angry, sad, depressed, living in shame, self-medicating, diseased induced, and suffocating representative you send out daily to defend yourself with reckless abandon. “Until you do right by me…”

It’s not effortless. Living authentically often means many opportunities for being uncomfortably vulnerable, while fearlessly exhaling each precious breath with no worries about how it’s going to look, be perceived, or feel. However, the rewards are plentiful when being able to come from a place of self-love, which ultimately brings about the freedom we so desire and deserve. It’s also an act of love for those in your life, because they get to experience and connect with YOU in an intimate and true way, which in-turn can be the gift of freedom by giving permission to others to also unleash their true selves.

As you unlock the prison gates of your conflicting personas and allow you to run barefoot in the fields of the color purple, many won’t get it and YOU. And, that’s okay. But, have solace in that room will be made for those that do, when you and your SoulFULL Purpose evolve and shine.

Oh! And, there is no room for perfection here. Authenticity will not always be pretty. It will require a balance of much compassion, yet being totally real and honest with self. But, the beautiful and bright rainbows appearing after the hurricanes can lead to an abundantly blessed life of learning, growing, understanding, compassion, patience, integrity, healing, grace, love, joy, fun, and FREEDOM! Evolving one step at a time. One moment at a time. One day at a time. One sunrise to sunset at a time. So do YOU Boo! Live your life like it’s golden. Because it is. Because YOU are. Namaste. ONWARD!!! #BeDoLove #FindYourZen #BirthAndLiveYourSOULfullPurpose

Thanksgiving Culinary Love with a Touch of Spice Suite Essence

For Thanksgiving, I was led by spirit to spend a nice and chill time in the comfort of my home. This was followed by me going all out and being grateful for these skillful hands of mine and my five senses working together to create culinary magic.

First, there are the traditional menu items, however, experimenting is so much fun. With that, I roasted (usually sautéed) Brussel Sprouts for the first time. I got funky with it, preparing Roasted Crispy Brussel Sprouts with Lemon Ginger Balsamic Vinegar and BACON!!! Because bacon makes EVERYTHING taste better. Oh yeah! This dish was the essence of the meal.

I also prepared a “Sweet Potato Pecan Casserole”, “Cornbread Stuffing”, “Roasted Whole Chicken (Perdue always comes thru.) w/Honey Chipotle Rub” and a new addition to the family of “Creamed Corn”. And, a dear friend was gracious enough to prepare Macaroni & Cheese and Deviled Eggs. I am about to get acquainted with the day after leftovers in 5.4…

Thanksgiving is also an opportunity to give thanks. With that, I am grateful for:

– Breath and life.

– The culinary magic and wonder I’ve been gifted with and passed down from my Trini parents. This gift provides me with the magic of expression of love, uniqueness, creativity, and healing.

– The ability to share this gift with loved ones who get to delight in the love and YUMMYLICIOUSNESS.

Oh! And, shout out to Angel Anderson, who LIVES her SOULFull Purpose through The Spice Suite. This is an interactive spice bar in Takoma Park, where I purchased the balsamic vinegar and rub. I am grateful for Angel and this beautiful and eclectic shop, offering new and wonderful ways to bring the essence to your dishes. It’s a must to check out, especially on this Shop Small Business Saturday. https://www.thespicesuite.com and @thespicesuite

I cannot say enough how I love and am blessed to be able to share my culinary treats. For they are prepared and served as comforting and edible medicable enriched yummyliciousness with the savory and sweet textures of love, fun, happiness, and joy.

Remember to take time out of your normal daily rituals to partake in those things big or small that tap into your creative essence. Those things that can bring much healing, peace, joy, and pride to your spirit. And, that will also inspire and bring joy to others. Enjoy! Cheers! Peace! Namaste! #BeDoLove #BeDoLoveCREATE #Yummyliciousness #IChefToHealDelightAndWriteAboutIt #FindYourZen #BirthAndLiveYourSOULfullPurpose

Lovingly Affirming Self and Others

As Howard University homecoming’s go, there is much reminiscing, smiling, laughing, teasing, flirting, and networking. This past homecoming I was fortunate enough to get not only a much required ego boost from the “Dayum! You look good”. But more importantly, I continue to be reminded of a couple of spirit/heart boosts from two young ladies (in their 30s) from the alumni band.

One was telling her husband how much she loves and appreciates me. Which I in return informed them of how much I love their love and creative expression through film. Another, was one of my TBS sorors, who reminded me of a previous conversation we had that she never forgets and often inspires her. However, finding herself getting stuck after thinking about it. My response, “You’re so amazing. In those moments, please pick up the phone and let’s talk it though.”

In both moments I was TOTALLY caught off guard. In awe of the authentic love and adulation. And, reminded that you never know who’s watching or experiencing you at any given moment in a way that can inspire and/or heal.

This continues to be an extremely reflective time for me (Let’s face it, I’m a Sag so I’m almost always in a reflective/analytical mode.). I think of other times in the past year when I’ve been told I’m a “muse” and “I am worthy and enough”. I am blessed and full of gratitude for all who SEE me. They being beautiful gifts for sharing their genuine and heartfelt thoughts. It’s always the boost necessary to get me through a moment, another day or week, as life is often challenging and I too ponder “Am I enough”? Or “Am I living a purposeful life and being of contribution?”

I don’t take who I am, what I do, or what I speak/write lightly. I am a continuous and evolving work in progress to living a life of walking the walk and being the talk. However, it’s nice to know that I have the ability to inspire for I know that is one of my main purposes on this earth. It’s also nice to be appreciated and acknowledged. It’s a beautiful and affirming feeling to be GOT with messages sent through my enthusiastic cheerleaders/angels. And, I’m clear that it’s important for my healing spirit to be affirmed. However, I take great joy and pleasure returning the same in authentic kindness as affirming others is just as important. Even in this moment I’m participating in a daily affirming exercise with a dear friend for this month. It’s created a creative and refreshing way of expression for the purpose of acknowledging and uplifting another. It’s what we all need. And, please don’t let anyone tell you different.

With that, have you told someone (or yourself): That you love them today? What they mean to you? They are enough? Or extending a simple complement can go a long way. “Hey girl, that’s a nice dress.” “Dinner is amazing.” You are always so great with the children.” “The report you prepared for our meeting was well thought out and helpful.” It’s truly important to pause and take moments every day to let you, your loved ones, colleagues, or even a complete stranger know that you SEE them. We are all pushing through, healing, and looking for that thing that directs us or lets us know we’re on the proper path. Extending appreciation, affirmations, and gratitude to others and self can help to remove us from suffering and being stuck into hope, healing, and love. You never know when the heart you touch with your heart will be what’s needed in that moment to know they are enough and to breathe and move forth to another day or just that moment.

Be a gift/muse today and ALWAYS! Be YOUR gift/muse today and ALWAYS!

I love you. And, you know what? You are ENOUGH! You are ENOUGH now and forever! Amen! Say! No, scream with an all knowing from the depths of your soul “I.AM.ENOUGH”! Breathe! And, one more time. “I.AM.ENOUGH!” You truly are lovely. You truly are.

Keep the faith and hope lovelies to LIVING and attracting what’s true for you. Trust, God and your angels got your back. Namaste. #BeDoLove #FindYourZen #BirthAndLiveYourSOULfullPurpose #SuperSoulSunday

🎶I Know You Heard Me on the Radio. TRRUUUUEEEE!!!🎶- Please Tune In Today!

Please join me on INSIDE OUT LGBT Radio show live, today, Tuesday, October 31 from 2pm-3pm EST. The topic is “Mental Illness: The Silent Killer! Discovering and Getting on the Path to Healing and Living a Joyous and Authentic Life!”

Mark your calendar, set your alarm, and catch the show on DC’s WPFW-FM at 89.3 FM or live stream ANYWHERE from your computer, phone or tablet at www.wpfwfm.org. You can tune in while at work, driving, working out, eating a late lunch…

My guest will be Antoine Craigwell, Dr. Alicia Henderson, and Dr. Nicole Cutts. Today’s show is dedicated to my dear friend Phyllis Croom who recently transitioned. One of our last conversations passionately and with great concern touched on the denial of mental illness in the DMV lesbian community.

The show will cover the signs, tools to heal, and ways of being in tune and supportive. It will shed a much needed light on the end result of mental illness when our bodies, minds, spirits, and hearts are consumed with the negative influences of society 24 hours a day. Mental illness is a universal disease that can be manifested by each and every one’s individual experiences or DNA components, leading to, depression, self-abusive actions such as alcoholism, suicide, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia to name a few. My hope is the show will prove to not only support the LGBTQ community, but all in knowing that we are all in this fight together and can heal together.

Please share. Set your reminders. We want to hear from you. Call in to share your VOICE, thoughts, stories, and ask questions related to the topic. (202-588-0893). Thank you for the love and support. Send us good vibes. Make it a safe and beautiful day. Be great. Be courageous. Be Bold. BeDoLove! The New Puglia Kid on the Block

When you walk in to the several months old Trattoria da Lina, and you’re greeted by Michele, he immediately brings authenticity to Takoma Park, MD with the first singing syllable of his Puglia accent. Automatically I feel I’m in the perfect place.

While seated at the bar (just a few seats), my experience from beginning to end has me to believe I’ve died and gone to Puglia, Italy heaven. AMAZING authentic southern Italian food + Michele with his hospitable energy and sexy accent = #YUMMYLICIOUSNESS!

You see Michele has also graced us from Puglia, where the owner Marcello Minna and the restaurant’s namesake, Lina (Marcello’s mother) are from. And, they bless us with authentic southern Italian cuisine from recipes passed down from Ms. Lina. Bless her and her gift of food prepared and passed down with love.

Trattoria da Lina is rustically comfortable, friendly, delish, and reasonably priced. And, that’s all you can ask for.

I started with the complimentary bread and Sun-dried Tomato Olive Oil. Nice touch to the normal “over it” olive oil.

Next was the Burrata and Heirloom Tomatoes, which was very fresh and tasty.

After much (okay a lot) pondering over the pastas I decided on the Spaghetti Alla Carbonara with pancetta, eggs, and cheese. The pasta is made in-house. And, you know how sometimes you order a pasta dish and it comes out with glub globs of sauce. Nope! Not this one. And, me being the saucey gal that I am, I can admit it was just enough to bring the flavor and essence to the dish. Letting me know those other places are doing it all wrong.

And, for the finale, some people judge an Italian spot by its’ pasta. Some by its’ pizza. Others by its’ sauce. And, true, each and every one of those are imperative contributions to Italian food. But, my ultimate judge is Cannoli’s, for they can ruin or balance out an entire meal. Not the limp crusted kind. But, the one’s where the shell is the perfect crispness filled with creamy (not too creamy) and deliciously sweet (not too sweet) ricotta cheese. It is truly all about the shell.

I sipped on a Rose, which is outside of my normal wine of choice. And, I witnessed Michele preparing a Negroni and I just had to have one.

Before my time was over I found myself saying “Ya! Ya!” and “Grazie” in their infectious accent. Well, Grazie Ms. Lina, Marcelo, Chef, Michele and the rest of the team. Grazie Tante!

My friend Tracy Hogarth-Mosier of Blue Zaria (a travel curator company), had a wonderful Italy trip planned in 2017 that really piqued my interest. Prior to that, Italy was a mild thought. I’m more clear that Italy’s breathtaking countryside with its divine, authentic cuisine, needs to be an experiential vacation stop in the immediate future. Like pronto. Kalief Browder – Say His Name

Back in April I DVRd “Time: The Kalief Browder Story.” It’s a documentary series chronicling the life of a 16 year-old student from the Bronx who spent three years on Rikers Island without ever being convicted of a crime. From the description perhaps you can see why I hadn’t been ready to watch it and bypassed it many times. http://www.spike.com/articles/uzgvh0/time-the-kalief-browder-story-shawn-jay-z-carter-weinstein-television-partner-with-spike-for-a-landmark-television-event

Last night as I browsed Netflix, I came upon the documentary and decided to view the riveting six part series in its entirety. It is a story of indescribable tragedy on sooooooo many levels. It was painfully moving as I thought it would be. Yet important to watch (Still avoiding “13th“. I don’t think my heart can take it right now.). In the end all it seemed Kalief desired was justice for him and others to include an apology. However, the people (which included some familiar faces) that refused accountability was shameful.

God bless Kalief whose horrific and unfortunate experience was a catalyst for change. God bless his mother, family, and all those who did their best to support and show him love. And, God bless all the men and women (young and older) who day in and day out are treated unfairly and beat down (physically, mentally, and emotionally) by the justice system. Kalief, who was called a “modern day prophet” by Jay Z and many others fought tirelessly for positive change. Ultimately, his story led to changes in New York’s criminal-justice system. And, although they are closing Rikers (The cesspool hell on earth that it is.) we know there’s something profitable up their sleeves.

There are so many lessons to learn from Kalief’s story. One of them that stays with me is, I think about if Kalief had been given a chance to just get away from his environment. If someone would have scooped him up and removed him from his neighborhood. Once released from prison, I kept wishing he would move. Or at the very least given a chance to get away for some fresh air with an opportunity to exhale and find himself. And, not having the lawsuit be the priority if only for a moment. Who knows…

Also, the story is a reminder about the important issue of mental health. How life can be going pretty well and one unfortunate turn can lead to one’s spiraling out of control. And, how one’s unfortunate circumstances can affect many others. Much love and peace to Ms. Venida.

In life we have to be able to be in tune with our gut/intuition or The Whispers for guidance, direction, and ordering of steps. When faced with challenges, take time to be still and listen. This is especially when it’s saying uncle. Enough. I can’t breathe. At that point, it’s important to pause and decide what’s best to take care of YOU. It more than likely will require stepping out of your box with courage. However, it could be as simple as immersing yourself in something you love to do for creative therapy or taking a trip to a favorite locale to relax, refresh, and unwind. Or it could be something as important as taking the steps to seek professional help. And, believing that there is no shame in that. One of the many things I appreciated about Kalief is that he requested help. He didn’t shun it at all. He was clear he was in mental and emotional in trouble.

I felt Kalief was provided with a perfect opportunity. He knew it, yet he was blown off. You deserve not to blow you off. You only have this short life to live. You have so much work to do in the name of BeDoLove and living your SOULFull Purpose. Take care of you. Take care of your heart. Be well. Peace. 🎶Ohhhh Howard🎶 – Look Whose NOT Coming Back for Dinner

The Upset Recap: This past Saturday, Howard University 43 – UNLV 40. 45 point underdog. Largest point spread upset in college football history. Congratulations Bison and Coach London! The best on this 2017 season and beyond.

We Got That Bison/Showtime Pride:

-I heard my “Showtime” represented Howard well throughout Las Vegas and on the field. Thank YOU!

-I also heard there were those (i.e., referees and commentators) who weren’t hospitable or respectful. Their loss. Literally. Inga S Willis in true Bison Pride fashion set them straight. https://www.facebook.com/inga.willis/posts/10156447827883368

-Caylin choose Howard University for Howard. “Football alone was not the only factor that made this decision easy, Newton Sr. noted. “It was a combination of campus culture, strong academics, as well as an opportunity to play football,” said Newton Sr., an alumnus of Savannah State.” — https://theundefeated.com/features/cam-newtons-younger-brother-caylin-will-play-football-at-howard-university/

“We’re doing it the right way.”, Caylin said regarding his choice, live on ESPN outside Cook Hall. http://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/20575010

-An Honorary Bison in the Making – Big Bro gives a loving congratulatory Instagram shout out.

🎶I’m so glaaaaad. I went to Howard U.🎶 Still time to get those season tickets. Bison Love!!! #MissionPossible #HowardUniversity #InTruthAndService #IBleedBlue #MarchingBISON #HUYouKnow #I’mSoGladIWentToHowardU #AintNoPartyLikeAnHUParty #OhHowardWeSingOfThee

Give Back: In the spirit of the 43-40 win, Howard ask that YOU make a gift in the amount of $43.40 to support HU Athletics and the #MissionPossible spirit of Bison Football. http://www.hubison.com/news/2017/9/3/football-43-40-missionpossible-gift-campaign.aspx

Oh No You Didn’t: This probably won’t be the end of it. Also, can you say “Ca Ching”. See you in Vegas next time for a bigger and better extravaganza. In the meantime, Kent State here we come.

The Moral of the Story – New Moment! New Opportunity!: New coach. New quarterback. We restructured. We believed. We fought. We persevered. We won!

This is a lesson in when things (Losing seasons and getting beat up on.) aren’t working in your favor, you take a moment to lick your wounds. Then bring forth the strength to regroup, strategize, upgrade your team, get all to buy in, believe, and work your magic. And, I’m not just talking football. I’m talking LIFE! So to you I say, go forth and be great. Bison Love!

If I Was a Betting Bison: Wish I had betted. $100 on the Bison could have yielded $55,000. Humph…

Bring It: Fun exchange between our own Stan Verrett and UNLV’s Kenny Mayne. https://www.facebook.com/UNLVAthletics/videos/10156559612889951/

Bison Coverage – 🎶We Got a New Attitude🎶: “With the victory, HU picked up its first season opening win in more than a decade. Furthermore, Howard earned its first victory over a FBS foe in program history.” http://www.hubison.com/news/2017/9/3/football-bison-stun-rebels-in-historic-season-opener-victory.aspx

Hometown Coverage – We’re No Lambs. We’re Bison!: “In other words, the Bison were supposed to be a sacrificial offering.” — https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/dc-sports-bog/wp/2017/09/03/howard-and-caylin-newton-stun-unlv-in-one-of-the-biggest-upsets-in-college-football-history/?utm_term=.f538000f8d27

In Summary – We Did That: “Caylin Newton, the younger brother of Cam Newton, threw for 140 yards and a touchdown while under center for Howard. He really shined with room to run, totaling two rushing touchdowns and 190 yards on the ground. Newton led the Bison to the game-winning score with 7:34 still to go in the game, following a 42-yard pass to Anthony Philyaw with a four-yard dash into the end zone to put Howard up 43–40.”

That secured the first-ever win at Howard for head coach Mike London, who formerly served as Virginia head coach from 2010 to ’15…” — https://hbcubuzz.com/2017/09/cam-newtons-brother-leads-howard-university-beating-unlv-largest-point-spread-upset-college-football-history/

Your Spirit Wants to BE FREE!

I’ve discovered a new show that’s interesting and resonates with me. It’s on Viceland, and called “The Therapist“. With illness, death, and world tragedies in my face constantly as a result of personal experiences, in the news and/or social media, I know that seeking healthy outlets are necessary to feed and replenish my spirit. Television is often times the last place to find that, so it’s refreshing when there are shows that allow for self-reflection and healing.

“The Therapist” does it for me. This through the eyes of celebrities who too are mirrors and human beings wanting to live more than just a human experience. But, one of a healthy spiritual experience. And, them being vulnerable enough to share their experiences with those who bear witness and hopefully learn that no one is exempt and that we are all survivors of something.

Dr. Siri Sat Nam Singh (Meaning, “Great reliever in the truth.”) is the suave and in tune therapist. All the episodes provide profound insight, including the one with Katy Perry. You can see her episode here: https://youtu.be/uBj0qJ6bcIg. The episode I’m watching and just pushed paused on so I can get these thoughts out, is with Rich Homie Quan. 🎶Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! Ooohhh!!🎶

During this episode they were speaking of the ego and how it can be very controlling and always wanting to be right. And, the good doctor said, “Ego wants to win. Spirit wants to be.” You know that was one of those Oprah “ah ha” moments that resonated for me and stopped me in my tracks. It’s what was required to hear at this time in my life. That I truly just want to BE.

The beauty of life is when there is no judgement zone in deciding the best place or experience that resonates for one to be spiritually fed. God provides many outlets for IT to occur. There is no one stop shop. It can be ever-changing and can occur while at church, praying, meditating, writing, planting a garden, experiencing a concert or play, dancing, singing, cooking, hiking, sitting on the beach, watching a sunset or watching a television show. For me it doesn’t matter as long as I/we come out wiser, loving, forgiving, compassionate, and healed a bit more than a second ago. And, we are guided back on the path of unconditional love, honor, respect, grace, and the ultimate all-knowing that “Visions are planted in your soul to be birthed into divine existence.” — KCB

With this all in mind, it’s time to truly LIVE and LOVE. It’s time to surrender by releasing the fear. It’s time to release those things, thoughts, or people that you’ve latched on to all for the purpose of being right and wrongfully secure in your present ego induced suffering state. It’s okay though. I know you’re scared. I am too. No need for guilt or shame. We are all human beings striving to live a spiritual experience.

But, it’s never too late. You are always being guided. Especially through however you choose to be spiritually fed. Trust in the ordering of your footsteps. Silence the misguided voices. Listen to and trust the whispers angelically delivered to YOU for the purpose of empowering YOU to forgiveness of self and others. And, those whispers placing you on the road to self-discovery and your purpose. And, then spring into action to ultimately BE the masterpiece you were birthed to BE. As a child of God you are deserving IT, peace, and joy. Please believe it. Please breathe it. Please BE it.

The time is now. Your time is now. My time is now. Our time is now for you are not alone. We can get there together. We can be free together. Surrender. Surrender. Surrender. Ashe. #BeDoLove #FindYourZen #BirthAndLiveYourSOULfullPurpose #HealingEqualsFreedom

Love! #BeDoLove #WorkHardPlayHarder #FindYourZen #TravelHeals #BreatheAndExhale #BirthAndLiveYourSOULfullPurpose

The Great Wheel – The 175 foot tall, 170,000 pound Ferris wheel sits on Seattle’s waterfront over the Puget Sound on pier 57 near the Pike Place Market and Seattle Aquarium. The wheel is the only one of its kind to be built over water. And, at 175 feet, it’s the tallest great wheel on the entire West Coast as of its opening in 2012. http://seattlegreatwheel.com

Miners Landing – The historic pier where it all began! In 1897, the steamship Portland, weighed down with the first load of gold from the Klondike, docked at the pier where Miners Landing now stands. Now, Pier 57 is home to the Miners Landing, a family-friendly shopping, restaurant and entertainment complex.
